Wutachgorge

The gorge along the Wutach and its tributaries is a true hiker’s paradise. The region is characterized by its overwhelming primeval landscape with romantic gorges and primeval forests. It is located in the heart of the largest German nature park – the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. Wildly romantic places in the region invite you to take a detour. These include: Bonndorf, Blumberg, Bräunlingen, Lenzkirch, Hüfingen, Friedenweiler, Löffingen, the village of Wutach and Stühlingen. A special experience is the ride in the famous “Sauschwänzlebahn”.

Bildsteinrock

On the heights of the Bildstein you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Schluchsee reservoir. You can ideally combine this vantage point with a partial circumnavigation of the Schluchsee on good hiking trails. Don’t miss a detour to Unterkrummenhof, with direct lake access, where you can fortify yourself with a hearty snack or delicious cake.

Southern Black Forest / High Rhine

The Southern Black Forest / High Rhine region includes the highest part of the Black Forest. The Feldberg and the Herzogenhorn invite you to challenging hiking tours in summer and skiing in winter. The Belchen, the Schauinsland and the Blauen tower prominently over the Rhine plain. The Southern Black Forest is home to some of the largest nature reserves in Baden-Württemberg as well as the European Bird Sanctuary Southern Black Forest. The High Rhine region is the southernmost vacation region of the Black Forest. It adjoins the Dinkelberg to the east and extends via Hotzenwald and Klettgau to Randen near Schaffhausen. The towns on both sides of the Rhine shine with well-preserved evidence of medieval urban architecture.

Black Forest / Danube headwaters region

The region extends between the southeastern foothills of the Black Forest and the Swabian Alb. In the south, the region borders on Switzerland. The tourist highlights are diverse and offer more than just the well-known landscape of the southern Black Forest. “Brigach and Breg bring the Danube to way” is one of the most famous rhymes known from the source region. Along its two headwaters, this scenically and culturally diverse region expands over the Baar from Donaueschingen.

Southern Black Forest Bike Path

About 264 kilometers the “Südschwarzwald-Radweg” leads around the nature park Südschwarzwald. The route is perfectly suited for pleasure cyclists. It can be completed in three to four days. It starts in Hinterzarten with small climbs via Titisee-Neustadt – and then downhill via the Bähnle cycle path, through the Wutachflühen to the Hochrhein, westwards towards Rheinfelden over the Dinkelberg and along the Upper Rhine towards Freiburg. The 600 meter difference in altitude between Freiburg and Hinterzarten is easily mastered with the Höllentalbahn.

Bonndorf Castle with District Museum and Fools’ Rooms

The castle, which was built in 1952 and has been completely renovated today, is a cultural center that offers a variety of exhibitions, concerts, author evenings and lectures. Especially worth seeing: the large baroque ballroom. The unique Fools’ Exhibition with over 400 miniatures of the most beautiful Fasnet figures of the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet.

Hans Thoma Museum Bernau

Since its foundation in 1949, the Hans Thoma Museum of Art has established itself as a nationally important museum in the Black Forest.
The main focus of the museum is the permanent exhibition with about 50 exhibits of the painter Hans Thoma (1839-1924), who was born in Bernau. A smaller permanent exhibition is dedicated to the Black Forest landscape painter Karl Hauptmann (1880-1947). 14 paintings are on display, including several magnificent winter paintings.

Schwarzwälder Schinkenmuseum

Im denkmalgeschützten Feldbergturm im Hochschwarzwald befindet sich auf 1.493 Meter Höhe das interaktive Schwarzwälder Schinkenmuseum. In drei Sprachen können die Besucher dort mit allen Sinnen erfahren, was das Besondere am Schwarzwälder Schinken g. g. A. ist. Einblicke werden gewährt in die traditionelle Herstellung – vom Pökeln bis zum Räuchern -, und die vielseitigen Rezepte zum Mitnehmen machen so richtig Appetit. Black Forest Ski Museum Hinterzarten

The initiator of the Black Forest Ski Museum was Georg Thoma, who made Hinterzarten famous all over the world with his Olympic victory in Squaw Valley in 1960. The community of Hinterzarten, with the then mayor Hansjörg Eckert, supported the realization of the museum.

Thus, the presentation of the regional winter sports history was implemented in the community-owned Hugenhof, which was newly built in the 18th century.

Over two floors the departments house history, Georg-Thoma-Stube, beginnings of skiing in the Black Forest, Skiberg Feldberg, the first ski films, winter sports equipment, Black Forest winter and bobsleigh sports, winter painters, ski club history, ski fashion and others are arranged in the original rooms.

Special exhibitions are held regularly in the museum.

Protective Association of Black Forest Ham Producers

Its name is its program. Since its foundation in 1989, the Schutzverband der Schwarzwälder Schinkenhersteller has stood for the consistent protection of the brand. Its members are proud of the high quality of Black Forest ham PGI and the traditional production in the region. The tasks of the association are manifold: internal and external quality management, communication and marketing, legal advice, especially to prevent plagiarism. Milestones in the association’s history were the attainment of EU protection of the PGI in 1997, which establishes traditional production in the region, the introduction of a quality seal reserved solely for members, and the opening of the Black Forest Ham Museum in 2013.
